Physiotherapy for Sciatica Pain Relief

There’s no denying that sciatica can profoundly affect your day-to-day life. The intense, radiating pain and numbness can make it difficult to walk, take care of chores, and complete other everyday tasks. Fortunately, effective sciatica treatment is available–without surgery.

At MSK Centre, we regularly work with patients to help them manage their sciatica symptoms. We focus on efforts on addressing the underlying cause of their sciatica, which helps provide long-term relief.

Today, we want to share more about sciatica: what it is, what causes it, and what we can do to help.

Understanding Sciatica: Symptoms and Causes

Sciatica is a common condition that causes pain, tingling, or numbness along the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back through the hips and down each leg. This discomfort often results from nerve compression due to herniated discs, spinal stenosis, or muscle tightness.

Sciatica Symptoms

  • Sharp or burning pain in the lower back, buttocks, and legs
  • Numbness or weakness in the affected leg
  • Pain that worsens with prolonged sitting or sudden movements
  • Difficulty walking or standing for long periods

Sciatica Causes

Herniated or Bulging Disc

  • The most frequent cause of sciatica is a herniated disc (also called a slipped or ruptured disc). Between the vertebrae in the spine are soft, gel-like discs that cushion movement. If one of these discs bulges or ruptures, it can press on the sciatic nerve, leading to inflammation and pain.

Spinal Stenosis

  • Spinal stenosis is the narrowing of the spinal canal, often due to age-related changes. When the space around the spinal cord becomes too tight, it can compress the sciatic nerve.

Degenerative Disc Disease

  • As people age, the spinal discs lose water and shrink, leading to reduced cushioning and increased friction between vertebrae. This wear and tear, known as degenerative disc disease, can increase your risk of a herniated disc.

How Physiotherapy Helps with Sciatica Relief

Physiotherapy’s approach to sciatica treatment focuses on addressing the root cause. We’ll work to reduce inflammation, improve mobility, and strengthen the muscles supporting the spine. A structured treatment plan can help alleviate pain and prevent future flare-ups. Here’s how:

Pain Management and Immediate Relief

Physiotherapists use targeted techniques to help reduce pain and inflammation, including:

  • Manual therapy to release tension in tight muscles and improve circulation
  • Treatment modalities to reduce inflammation and facilitate healing.

These strategies can provide immediate relief while preparing the body for movement-based rehabilitation.

Mobility Training

Tight muscles, particularly in the lower back and hamstrings, can aggravate sciatic nerve pain. Stretching can help relieve tension and improve mobility. A physiotherapist will guide you through safe stretching techniques to maximize benefits while minimizing strain.

Strengthening and Stability Exercises

Weak core and lower back muscles can contribute to sciatica. Strength-building exercises help stabilize the spine and reduce pressure on the sciatic nerve. We focus primarily on core stabilizing exercises, lower back and gluteal strengthening, and functional movement training.

Postural and Movement Education

Poor posture and improper movement patterns can worsen sciatica. We’ll assess your posture and movement habits to identify contributing factors and provide personalized tips to address these impairments.
